Zac Efron sheds off his "High School Musical" nice guy image, to portray a more daring and ambitious role in his new movie "We Are Your Friends." He also lost ten kilos and toned a fairer skin to perfect his cool DJ personality.
Efron, 27, plays Cole Carter, a struggling 23-year-old electronic dance music DJ who aspires fame and fortune. In the process of crafting one hit track that will get him recognized and establish his career as a professional DJ, Cole challenges his talents, determination, and relationships.
Cole is mentored by James, played by Wes Bentley, an older and more experienced DJ. The young aspirant comes across Sophie, played by Emily Ratajkoski, the girlfriend of James. Seduced by Sophie, Cole falls in the love trap, damaging his friendship with James. Left on his own, Cole faces confusion, Mirror reported.
Meanwhile, Efron has never been a DJ in his entire life. For his role, Efron needed a lot of mentoring in music, especially in EDM. "There's definitely a lot of buttons and a lot of knobs. But once you get the hang of it and spend enough time on that deck, you're going to get a kick out of it," said Efron.
California-born Efron trained with Swedish DJ Alesso and Los Angeles-based DJ and producer Jason Stewart, also known as Them Jeans.
Efron finds his new role refreshing. He feels accomplished after acquiring an entirely new skill, Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Finally, Efron spoke on his personal love for music, "Music is made to bring people together. This movie speaks to our generation. This is our music. It comes from us. We can create it. And maybe we can change the world in some small way. That's really exciting."
