Security analysts have discovered a porn app that not only provides nude pictures, but also secretly takes photos of smartphone owners. It then hijacks the device and demands ransom money. The malware code of the unofficial application locks the handset, and then the ransomware makes a demand for money worth hundreds of dollars before it unlocks the mobile phone.
The malicious software was found in the Adult Player app. It was discovered by Zscaler's security analysts.
Instead of providing pornographic pics Adult Player secretly uses its front-facing camera to take photos. It then takes the smartphone hostage and demands a $500 USD ransom via PayPal, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Deleting the malicious app and then rebooting the phone is futile. The malware will show up again.
Zscaler's analysts have provided a way to ditch the malicious app without paying the ransom money. Users of the map must open their device in safe mode. After switching on the handset's administrator mode, they can then select and disable the app, according to IBN Live.
Android app users should also be aware that the malicious app is not available at Google Play. It is installed at an unofficial website.
This highlights the importance of only installing apps from Google's official Android app stores. Android smartphone owners can take a step to be 100 percent certain. They must click the "Unknown Sources" box in the device's "Security" settings.
Users should also make a backup of their smartphone's data. This will help to prepare for any attacks on their phones, including worms, viruses, and ransomware.
