The semifinal cast for the US Open men's competition is set with two great matchups.
Roger Federer is on a remarkable resurgence as he has yet to lose a set after turning 34 years old last August 8. ESPN noted that he has gone 25-0 as he won the Cincinnati Open and is now rolling over the opposition in the US Open.
The Swiss legend seems properly motivated as he rested in late July precisely because he wanted to have a run for his sixth US Open title.
"I like the trophy," Federer said in his news conference. "And I'm happy that when you win it you get the same-sized one [at Wimbledon, the All England Club gives the men's champs a tiny replica]. But I wish it was also engraved with all the previous winners."
"I love tennis history," Federer added. "I like to see who has won in the past, you know, [engraved] here on the trophy so it feels like it's the original one, not just a duplicate."
Federer has a reference to the Wimbledon trophy which recently added a plinth because the Cup ran out of space according to FTW. If that ever happens, Federer will see his name there five times-six if he wins the next two matches.
The quarterfinals triumph by Federer set up an All-Swiss semifinals between Roger and World no. 5 Stan Wawrinka. Despite the latter's familiarity with his countryman, he is not expected to stop Roger's rampage.
On the other semifinal match, Novak Djokovic will take on defending champion Marin Cilic. While he was the giant killer last year after beating Federer, beating Djokovic would be a tough draw as he is 0-13 in his head-to-head with the current World no.1.
