Apple's electric car has a target release date of 2019. The company has reportedly poached top employees from companies such as Ford, General Motors, Tesla and Volkswagen to make sure that the vehicle gets released on schedule.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has been "aggressively" hiring big names from various car companies. It was also reported that launching its own car will be one of Apple's main priorities this year.
The team has spent a year investigating the feasibility of an Apple-branded car and by the looks of it, the project has been given the green light. Insiders shared that Titan, the leaders of the initiative, has been given permission to "triple the 600-person team" working on the electric car.
According to Mac Rumors, it has yet to be confirmed if the Apple car will be built from ground up. Earlier reports suggest that they could also collaborate with established companies. It was said that Apple was interested in the BMW i3 as the basis for the new car but the talks fell through.
Apple reportedly wanted to go head on against Tesla Motors Inc. and Generals Motors Co., who are both planning to release an electric car in the coming years. The companies reportedly was working on building a competitive priced electric vehicle than can go more than 200 miles on a single charge.
The publication also pointed out that the first Apple car will not be feature a self-driving option contrary to what has been previously reported.
