Tech giant Apple is finally dipping its toes in the car industry. Rumors brewing around the Cupertino-based company claim that it is planning to release its own developed car before the end of 2019.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is already committed to the development its car project. The report added that the information was provided by people who have insider information about the project.
Apple's car development arm is known only as Project Titan. People close to the company claim that Apple has already given the green light in order to hire additional employee. The project is expanding its 600-member team in order to fast forward the development of the rumored Apple car.
Apple is hiring experts in the field of driverless car technology. Despite the massive employment drive, rumors claim that driverless car is not the company's main target for now. Apple is developing an electric car but not necessarily an autonomous one.
As part of the Project Titan, Apple has been busy in the development of battery packs and sensors that can be integrated into electric cars.
Rumors also claim that the Apple car will most likely resemble a minivan.
According to Wired, if the rumors are true that Apple car will hit the public by 2019, it is facing major competition from some of the well-established names in the automotive industry including Nissan and Toyota. Tesla, which is well-known in the electric car industry, is also scheduled to release a new car in 2019.
Currently, Apple is providing software which can be integrated into a car's infotainment system. The iPhone CarPlay feature is currently integrated in cars manufactured by Honda, BMW and Ford.
