Alden Richards and Maine "Yaya Dub" Mendoza, known as AlDub, was allegedly invited to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" due to their growing popularity in social media.
A photo of DeGeneres circulated online, in which the Emmy award-winning TV host was holding a sign, which said, "I want Aldub on The Ellen show." The Manila Times, however, found out that it was an edited photo. DeGeneres was originally greeting Sam Smith for his birthday.
The publication pointed out that it was easy to believe that Aldub may be guesting on an international show given the attention they have been receiving on social media. It was said that they have been a trending topic for more than two months, with tweets coming from different parts of the globe: Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, California USA, Dubai to Italy.
They recently broke their Twitter record by having more than 21 million tweets this Saturday, Sept. 26
According to the Philippine Star, "Meteor Garden" star Barbie Xu has also wondered why Aldub was trending almost every day. Xu asked her more than 60,000 followers to explain the phenomenon.
Fans immediately responded and explained that Aldub was a combination of Alden and Yaya Dub's name, the lead characters in "Eat Bulaga's" "Kalyeserye" segment. It was said that some fans compared the loveteam to Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan) and Shancai's team up back in the day.
The outlet also held that "God Gave Me You" singer Bryan White also wondered about the couple. Similar to Xu, White was wondering why they kept trending every day. Some fans hoped that the singer will eventually come to the Philippines and have a sing off or even collaborate with Richards.
