The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus following their release date are off to a good start but already Apple is rumored to be working on the sequels. The plan for the iPhone 7 is to surpass what its predecessor will accomplish in the months ahead.
The main expectation for the next iPhone is to beat the 6S and to do that Apple will likely opt for an overhaul inside and out. A10 processing chip is already the subject of supply chain rumors - it will be the brain and muscle for the iPhone 7.
However, what really interests most is the new iPhone build and design that would differentiate from the iPhone 6S. One design that likely in the pipeline is a wraparound display, which according to BGR is a concept inspired by published Apple patents first pointed to by Patently Apple.
An iPhone with a wraparound display has been in discussion even before the iPhone 5s was issued in 2013 and like the latest reports it was then suggested that the overall build and design will involve the ditching of the iconic Home and all other physical buttons. Control keys all rest on the device's glass panel that covers its front, back and the edges.
In the absence of the physical keys, the Home button is likely relocated to the glass panel including the embedded Touch ID or fingerprint terminal. How exactly the implementation is remains unclear but this suggestion seems in line with a recent report that said the iPhone 6S will be the last metal-wrapped iOS smartphone.
But before the iPhone 7 is unboxed, it is likely that Apple will unload a third version of its 2015 iPhones, according to Business Insider. The planned model will serve as the direct replacement of the iPhone 5C, therefore taking the place the cheapest iPhone in the lineup. The tentative name would be iPhone 6C.
The lower-end iPhone is described as the stripped down version of the iPhone 6S with smaller functions or skinny features compared to its high-end siblings, Business Insider reported. The publication pointed to a latest Brean Capital research note as source of its information.
It remains unclear if the iPhone 6S will be of the same profile as that of the iPhone 6S or will it be housed in a 4-inch casing as previously reported. But one thing is sure, it will be priced lower than the main attraction.
"This (the iPhone 6C) would allow AAPL to tap into emerging market/lower functional ASP-sensitive areas of the smartphone market," the Brean Capital report was quoted by Business Insider as saying.
If this rumor will prove accurate, the iPhone 6C is pegged to launch between March and June next year or months ahead of the supposed iPhone 7 release date in the second half of 2016.
