Reddit launched on Tuesday Upvoted, a news portal for original stories, videos and graphic. The contents are created by an independent editorial team within the company.
CNN reports that the news website aims to stop Reddit from losing to other media companies on stories that originally started from the online community with millions of members.
While the stuff that Redditors create everyday "blows our mind," however, instead of telling the story, other news outlets use their content and repackage it as their own, not mentioning that it originated from the Reddit community.
"We think our users' stories need to be told, but with them at the center of it," Reddit said in a statement. Upvoted would also give users a chance to comment and vote the stories up or down.
For now, Upvoted readers could expect 10 to 20 new articles daily which would grow to 40 in the future. Weekly, there would be two new videos. One would come from a recent Ask Me Anything content and the other from a new web series. Rapid New Network reports that Vickie Chang, former editorial director of MySpace, would head Upvote.
Reddit said that Upvoted would not have traditional banner or pop-up ads. Advertisers would instead pay Upvoted workers to write articles similar to other stories within the site. It estimated that two percent of stories on Upvoted would be paid by advertisers and would carry the label "sponsored."
The ad format, already used by Buzzfeed, has also been adapted by traditional news providers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post to boost their revenue. Other newly launched Reddit products include the weekly podcast and newsletter.
