The news website recognized how the chosen projects used technology in their construction plans in order to save water and energy while protecting the environment. This kind of recognition hopes to motivate others in various fields to follow suit.

One of the chosen models by China Economic Net was the Net Zero Energy Building extension project. The Institute of Building Environment and Energy presented this approach through 28 technological techniques that reduce emissions and control its key causes such as humidity and temperature.

Using the 28 technologies, the building saved on its cooling costs by 50 percent during the summer. Moreover, alternative heating methods were used in the building during the winter.

"Innovation of the technology will be the key to creating an energy-saving society. The application of the technology has to be standardized to its maximum limit," said South China University of Technology's Building Environment and Energy Laboratory chief Meng Qinglin.

Studies revealed that the top three sectors that use up the most energy include transportation, buildings, and industrial businesses.

The Chinese government pledged in 2009 that the country's carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by up to 45 percent per unit of GDP by 2020. The application of energy-efficient technologies in buildings is one of the methods used to achieve this goal.
