General Motors recently issued a recall order of more than 3,000 pickup trucks and SUVs. The recall order that covers the 2014 and 2015 model years was issued after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) discovered that the cars have ignition switch problems.
The NHTSA report reads, "In the affected vehicles, the ignition lock actuator may bind, making turning the key difficult or causing the ignition to stuck in the Start position. If stuck in the Start position, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the Accessory position, causing a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash."
The NHTSA added in the event of a car crash, the airbag will not deploy which in turn increases the risk of injury to the cars' occupants.
The recall includes the following vehicles:
- 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe manufactured from Feb. 6, 2014 to Feb. 13, 2014
- 2015 Chevrolet Suburban manufactured on Feb. 12, 2014
- 2015 GMC Sierra manufactured from Jan. 24, 2014 to Feb. 26, 2014
- 2014 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado manufactured from Jan. 24, 2014 to Feb. 26, 2014.
General Motors will properly notify owners of all affected vehicles by mail. Once the notification is received, owners can bring their car to their respective dealers in order to replace the ignition lock housing. The company also said that the replacement and repair of the faulty ignition switch will be free of charge.
The recent GM recall due to switch ignition problem is somewhat identical to the now infamous Switchgate fiasco in 2014 that forced the company to recall more than 12 million vehicles, according to The Car Connection.
