Chinese President Xi Jinping has asked for more collaboration with Papua New Guinea in sectors of agriculture, culture, energy, infrastructure, natural resources and trade. 

The Chinese president said that the People's Republic of China is open to a more productive and meaningful bilateral ties with Papua New Guinea, the country's significant South Pacific partner.

President Xi's statements were made during the meeting with Prime Minister Peter O'Neill of Papua New Guinea, who is visiting Beijing for the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders' Meeting from Nov. 10-11.

According to President Xi, Papua New Guinea is one of the leading countries in terms of regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Chinese president will soon visit the island country of Fiji in the South Pacific Ocean as he meets with other countries that hold diplomatic ties with China. Xi said that he will be discussing more cooperation with the other leaders in the region.

Prime Minister O'Neill said to Xi that Papua New Guinea observes increased growth in his country and his citizens' livelihood due to investments that come from China.

The China-Papua New Guinea diplomatic relations started back in 1976 after the latter became an independent country.

Also, during the APEC summit, President Truong Tan Sang of Vietnam expressed his desire for a stronger bilateral relationship with Papua New Guinea. The former country will be hosting the 2017 APEC summit, while the latter will host the summit in 2018.
