"The Brink" season 2 has been officially cancelled by HBO after months of announcing its renewal. In its official statement, the network explained that after much evaluation they could no longer give the show a second season.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, there was no clear indication as to why HBO decided to cancel the series. In the press release, the network just claim that they were proud of the show's first season and wished everyone the very best.
The outlet, however, speculated that the low buzz and relatively low ratings may have contributed to HBO's decision. The show had an average of 1.1 million viewers for its regular time slot and a gross multi-platform weekly audience of 5.5 million viewers.
The announcement came after the untimely death of the series' executive producer Jerry Weitraub.
In a recent interview with Esquire, "The Brink" star Jack Black explained the importance of injecting humor in serious topics of conversation such as politics. The comedian explained that he came on board with the series because he liked how "risky" it was. He said that a dark comedy about the World War III showed a lot of promise.
Black also explained that the series "humanized" the situation. He pointed out that it also broke stereotypes, specifically of what a family in Pakistan would be like. He shared that the series was not all about strong Americans "fixing things."
"It's also about people on both sides of the equation and how we're all just human beings in different situations," he said.
