The Gulouxi Theater is proudly inviting theater fans to watch their interpretation of the drama "Divorce" written by famous Chinese novelist and dramatist Lao She.
On Dec. 3-7, the theater will be portraying Lao's depiction of people's confusion through a recount of the story of couples going through divorce during the first few years after the practice was introduced in China before 1949.
The drama will be covering issues about the new concept of cutting the binds of matrimony as well as the obstacles that people undergoing divorce are expected to experience.
The drama's director explained how the entire production--the musical score, stage layout and character design--depicts human confusion during one of the most perplexing times in a couple's lives that was clearly portrayed in Lao's novel.
Lao She, originally known as Shu Qingchun, was a Chinese writer of humorous and satiric novels and short stories as well as patriotic and propagandistic plays and novels about the Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945.
During an interview about "Divorce," Lao She expressed how he was able to establish his writing style through the novel during the 1960s.
"When I wrote this novel, I began to abandon the classical style of wring and used vernacular language. My language in this novel is simple and vivid," he stated.
Famous Chinese actor Fang Xu, who would be piloting the drama adaptation of "Divorce" this December, received praise from critics and the media for his outstanding job at converting the novel into a play while preserving Lao She's literary style.
The Beijing Daily also lauded him for creating "a new way to interpret the relationship between literature and drama, theater and performance and audiences and performers."
