China's ruling party and cabinet have announced its prohibition of the performance or playing of the country's national anthem during funerals and weddings as well as in commercial arenas, according to a Global Times report.

In a statement by the general offices of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee and the State Council, use of the national anthem, titled "March of the Volunteers" with lyrics by Tian Han and music by Nie Er, is also disallowed during entertainment events and celebrations without a political purpose.

The statement also enumerated places and occasions where the anthem can be played, such as the start of public political meetings, diplomatic symposia and important international assemblies.

Also permitted for the anthem to be sung or played are during national flag raising ceremonies and athletic meets.

The statement added that the Chinese national anthem should be promoted in educational institutions all over the country, including kindergartens.

The ruling party and cabinet have tasked local government officials to monitor the singing and playing of the anthem and to reprimand those who violate established etiquettes.
