Due to the Paris attacks that took place on Friday, Nov. 13, the Chinese government and public security authorities have issued intensified counterterrorism security measures, according to a report by China Daily.
"Police officers should assume their responsibilities to fight terrorism," said Guo Shengkun, China's minister of public security, in a video conference held on Sunday, Nov. 15. Security and counterterrorism officials were also present.
As part of the intensified security measures, Chinese police will implement preventive policies and strengthened patrols in areas like entertainment venues, schools, shopping malls, as well as transportation hubs such as airports and railway stations.
The Chinese police has been specifically instructed to keep an eye out for guns, express delivery services, and dangerous articles and substances.
The minister of public security also expressed commitment to resolve small disputes to prevent them from developing into bigger issues that can trigger extreme or violent incidents.
Finally, counterterrorism security measures will also include the collection and analysis of intelligence to undermine any possible terror attacks, Guo said in the video conference.
The high-profile attack in Paris, which was organized by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, has claimed the lives of 132 individuals and injured hundred others. According to the BBC, most of the people targeted were newlyweds, students and "bright young things."
Countries are vigilant as the attacks on Paris might be repeated elsewhere.
"China is facing the same threats from IS as France and must prepare for similar terror attacks, which were well-planned and targeted multiple locations at the same time with different firearms and equipment, resulting in devastation in the target city," said Li Wei, an anti-terrorism expert from the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.
Aside from China's major cities, regional centers and other sectors are also encouraged to strengthen public security and prepare for any terror attacks.
