The Firefox OS phone, at $35, is no longer the cheapest mobile unit on the market. Walmart is offering for $10 the Sunrise L15G and Lucky LG16.
Engadget reports that the two models offer low-grade specs and run on Android 4.4 KitKat. It has WiFi but lack 4G and has no front-facing camera. The phones support a microSD card that allows the owner to increase storage space from its current 4GB storage. The specs and software of the two phones are the same.
The tech website points out "for that price, you shouldn't expect them to run Marshmallow," adding that the bare-bones but functional smartphone is less than the price of a dinner.
BGR adds that the two LG models have specs better than the first-generation iPhone. It as a 3.8-inch touch display, 1.2GHz dual-core processer and 3-megapixl camera.
However, Raymond Wong of Mashable warns that despite the unbeatable price of the two LG units, it has 2009-era specs and lacks LTE connectivity. He adds that the two units are also currently out of stock.
Wong instead recommends buying other low-cost Android phones that deliver quality user experience. He cites the Moto G and OnePlus X as examples.
Ars Technica has a contrary opinion. While the website acknowledges the phones are "grossly insecure," however, "at least Google Play is rather good at bringing new features to old versions of Android." It notes the $10 price tag is a sale price since the same unit sells for $60 on Amazon. The units are locked to Tracfone service, which makes the website believe the rock bottom price is due to a subsidy. But the phone is not under contract with Tracfone.
