Ford Motors announced on Monday that it is recalling more than 451,000 midsize cars. The recall order was issued after the company discovered a potential gas tank leak that may result to increase risk of fire.
The recall order will cover Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans with model years 2010 and 2011. The sedans were built in Mexico from July 2008 to March 2011. Ford said that 451, 865 vehicles were affected in North America.
According to USA Today, the recall will affect 411,205 cars in the United States, 33, 605 in Canada and 7, 055 in Mexico. Ford added that all the affected cars were manufactured at the Ford plant in Hermosillo, Mexico.
The cars included in the recall have purge valve that can cause pressure to change inside the gas tank. As the pressure continue to increase or decrease, a crack can develop in the top part of the tank which in turn will cause fuel to leak.
The leak can cause fire if it comes in contact with a flame or spark. Ford said that it has not received any complaint or accident report related to the issue.
Ford dealers will have to update the powertrain control module software in order to fix the problem. The dealers will also inspect the valve and check the tanks for any leaks in order to make sure that everything is covered before the affected cars are allowed back on the streets.
According to Auto Blog, Ford Motors also issued a safety recall covering a handful of 2016 Ford F-650 trucks due to steering column issues.
