"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 star Ian Somerhalder may have just hinted on the show's cancellation in 2016.
In an interview with Variety, Somerhalder said that not much has changed on the show ever since Nina Dobrev left after season 6.
Fans believe that the actor's statement could serve as an indication that the series could be cancelled after season 7.
"I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Dobrev was gone and I was one of those people. I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show," he said.
Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will be moved to a Friday air date starting January 2016.
Fans couldn't help but feel concerned because moving a show to a Friday timeslot could only mean that it's in danger of being axed.
As of late, it has become common knowledge that the ratings of "The Vampire Diaries" are no longer as impressive as they once was before.
With this, it's highly possible that the series will be cancelled by The CW after this season, according to Fashion N Style.
In other news, there are also some rumors that Somerhalder will exit the franchise after season 7 because he believes that "The Vampire Diaries" is no longer helpful to his career.
The actor is taking some inspiration from the fact that Dobrev was able to leave the show, and is now about to appear in some new TV shows and movies.
"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Thursdays on The CW.
