It has been 18 months since Alex Lebrun, Laurent Landowski and Willy Blandin founded an open community-based platform that lets developers create apps which make use of voice and speech recognition system.

The Palo Alto, California-based company is said to have been recently acquired by the social media giant Facebook though, they were not able to disclose the terms of the deal, PC World reports.

Wit.ai's catchphrase suggests that they turn "voice or text into a structured data" that benefitted the 6,000 developers using its platform, in building applications and devices where people can communicate. Their technology is undoubtedly a good addition to Facebook as it will help them create something new on how their users will interact with one another, much like Google voice search or Apple Siri.

There is no specific data yet on how Facebook will use and integrate the technology on their platform but some say they might use it to create a voice-to-text application that can navigate through their platform.

The technology can also be a great help in creating a feature such voice-to-text status update, as this will be very beneficial for those Facebook users that are too lazy to type using their keyboards or keypads.

It is also possible that Facebook will create a speech-to-text input for their messenger, just like Google and Apple's own command systems, where all your speech will be transcribed into text then afterwards, it will allow you to send the message through a voice command.

Facebook may have acquired Wit.ai but it is said that their technology will not be exclusive for Facebook as the platform will still be open and free for everyone including outside developers.
