AT&T unveiled its list of 38 cities, and 18 more metro areas to receive the new GigaPower fiber service.
The Dallas-based mobile wireless carrier aims to double its fiber internet footprint by the end of 2016. There are 18 areas now where GigaPower is already available, with an addition of Los Angeles and West Palm Beach, according to CNet. Los Angeles and West Palm Beach will receive the service in the coming months.
The preliminary version started in Austin two years ago. GigaPower is a complete fiber-to-the-premises network, which involves rolling fiber-optic cables to everyone’s home. It is a step up from AT&T’s previous fiber offering, which was mostly fiber-to-the-neighbourhood (FTTN): fiber-optic cables run for most of the network, but the last mile is still old-school copper cables.
AT&T's plan of expanding its fiber network will enable downloads and uploads at speeds of one gigabit per second to even more consumers throughout the country. These kinds of speeds will allow customers to download 25 songs in less than a second, a TV show in three seconds or a favorite HD movie in less than 36 seconds.
The American telecommunications corporation will end up building fiber network to more than 14 million homes and small businesses. This will make it one of the largest fiber deployments in the United States.
Google was the pioneering role in launching gigabit services with, and its prices are a little budget friendly. The fiber service was launched in 2010 to drive demand for faster broadband services, Gizmodo reported. Now, it is even better to see other companies such as AT&T continuing the rollout of high-speed internet to the rest of the country.
