A new crash rating report released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety only includes one American car. The report also dropped several 2015 models.
In total, 48 cars bearing the 2016 year model received the Top Safety Pick+ rating. Included in the list is the Chrysler 200 which is the sole American car. According to the IIHS website, 61 cars in total meet the criteria set by the organization.
The Chrysler 200 scored "good" for small front overlap and moderate from overlap. The car also offers optional automatic-braking system that received either "advanced" or "superior" rating.
Compared to the 2014 grade rating, this year's criteria is rigorous. In the 2014 rating, cars that scored "acceptable" on the small front overlap test were still awarded with the TSP+ rating.
For 2016 car models, they must achieve a "good" rating in the small overlap test in order to be awarded with the TSP badge.
Japanese car manufacturers Honda and Toyota were tied for the most TSP+ and TSP awards, scoring nine awards each. All 2016 Volvo and 2016 Subaru models earned the TSP+ award, except for the Volvo XC70 which is still waiting to be tested. Seven Audi and Volkswagen models, including the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf, earned the TSP+ award,
Five American cars were also part of the TSP list, although they did not earn the top award. The cars are Buick Encore, GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Malibu Limited, Chevrolet Sonic and the Ford F-150 SuperCrew. Three KIA 2016 car models made it to the list, the Sedona, Soul and Sorento.
According to Car and Driver, the IIHS will test more 2016 car models. The organization will also release a complete report for full-size pickup truck.
