The 3D touch technology that iPhone 6 owners would enjoy would soon be available in iPad-size displays on devices made by Apple. However, it would only be available until after the Cupertino-based tech giant has launched the iPhone 7 and iPad Air 3 in 2016.
Apple Insider, in an exclusive report, says that so far, Apple has been unable to scale the current 3D Touch technology for devices with large displays such as the 9.7-inch screen it uses for iPads. However, Apple is currently working on a comparable technology to integrate the iPhones and iPads which could potentially provide 3D Touch support to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the tech website cites its source.
3D uses pressure-sensing Force Touch technology, billed by Apple as "the next generation of multi-touch." Apple included the technology in Apple Watch and MacBook trackpads. Force Touch has a series of perimeter sensors to detect pressure from the finer. It has granular coverage across the whole display using capacitive sensors integrated with the display backlight.
The Apple next-generation 3D Touch will use the same prince as its current technology on the iPhone 6, which measures the distance between the gadget's flexible glass cover and the sensor array which would output force and location data for every finger press.
On Tuesday, KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, wrote in a research note that Apple would likely not offer a 3D Touch-capable iPad Air 3.
But MacWorld reports that since the iPhone 7 would be launched in September 2016, it would likely have the 3D Touch found in the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.
