J.J. Abrams' space sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" continues to generate its record at the box office, as the fastest film to make $1 billion worldwide.
Following its release on Dec. 18 in 4,134 theaters, Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" grossed more than $544 million in the United States and more than $546 million in other countries, which make a sum of more than $1 million on a global scale, according to Box Office Mojo.
"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" grossed more almost $248 million on its opening weekend. The film hit $500 million domestically in ten days, which is faster than Colin Trevorrow's "Jurassic World," which hit the same figure in 17 days, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The record of Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" boosted Disney's box office total to more than $2 million domestically, making it the biggest domestic and global debuts of all time. In fact, the seventh installmeent of the "Star Wars" film franchise also had biggest IMAX record and the highest theater average for a wide release with $57,568.
"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is set 30 years after the events in the "Return of Jedi." The film stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Max von Sydow, Simon Pegg, Oscar Isaac, and Domhnall Gleeson, among others.
