Sony announced in its financial report for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2015 that, at present, there are 37.7 million PlayStation 4 consoles being used by players all over the world.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita are poised for an expansion in Japan, an interview with Sony's President in Asia Atsushi Morita reveals.

Sales of both PS4 and PS Vita have gone up in Japan in 2016. According to Dual Shockers, Sony sold a lot more gaming consoles in Japan in 2016 than in same corresponding period in 2015.

During an interview with Japanese gaming website Famitsu, Morita divulges his work strategy for 2016. Morita mentioned that in 2016, he would work towards making PS4 a standard entertainment hub across target groups in Japan. Additionally, a lot of games would be released in 2016. Dual Shockers reported that these games would explore unconventional territory and would be designed keeping in mind unique Japanese experience. Morita mentions that Sony has given its full support to such an endeavor.

Foundations for such expansion had begun in 2015. Morita promises that in 2016 he would drive hard to pick up gains from last year.

Two years back, Cinema Blend reported that PS4 lost its market in Japan to PS Vita. Though PS4 has since then stabilized in Japan, sales of PS Vita has been as stronger as ever.

Morita also mentioned that PS Vita offered a very different and yet significant gaming experience. According to Morita, PS Vita offered a home console experience with portability. He mentioned that he wanted to improve the early gaming experience of children, and develop communication between a child and his/her parents. Morita believes that both of these goals could be accomplished by PS Vita.

Morita in particular spoke about promoting games like "Minecraft" and "Dragon Quest Builders." He believes that both of these games had tremendous potential, and this was yet to be explored by many within Japan.
