Ian Somerhalder plays the lead character of Damon in "The Vampire Diaries" TV show.

"The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Julie Plec recently defended Ian Somerhalder's character Damon Salvatore from critics.

Just recently, some fans commented on Twitter that Somerhalder's character is starting to bore them to death.

Twitter user @EldestDamon tweeted the exec, "Why is Damon's character development falling? He takes one step forward and so many steps back."

In the article she penned for Entertainment Weekly, Plec defended the character by saying that Somerhalder's character was written to be kind of a villain and not an angel on the show.

"I would argue, and you might not agree with me, that the day Damon Salvatore is a perfect angel is a day we should stop making this show. People don't ever grow up to be perfect, and I'm not sure I'd like that Damon. We love exploring his depth, his vulnerabilities, and his deeply heroic core," she said.

Plec added that what makes Damon work on the show is the fact that people love to hate him and his guts, and this is something that they have maintained for the past seven seasons.

"But we also love to hate the part of him that's selfish, stubborn, manipulative and - let's face it - kind of an a**hole. You have to take the bad with the good," she continued.

Meanwhile, Plec also talked about Bonnie's (Kat Graham) statement when she encouraged Damon to cheat on Elena now that she's been put to a deep slumber.

The exec reminded loyal fans of Delena that Elena's last words to her boyfriend was to live his life.

Knowing Damon, Elena knew all of the thing that he could do, and he didn't want to restrict him from anything.

"The subtext in that was not to be a monk and not to retreat into insolation. But I'll be honest, I'm not sure he would have ever been with another woman if he hadn't though he had just burned his one true love to ash," she said.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will air its 14th episode on Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
