"The Vampire Diaries" fans will have the chance to see their favorite character Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) once again.

Before the season six finale, Dobrev announced her exit from the hit The CW franchise.

Following this, fans couldn't help but question the actress' decision especially since the show has always revolved around her character.

In a recent article penned for Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Julie Plec gave fans some hope with regards to Dobrev's return.

Plec added that not only is there a possibility that Dobrev will return to an upcoming episode of "The Vampire Diaries"; there is also hope for an Elena-Damon (Ian Somerhalder) reunion.

"All I can say is that Damon is committed to being at Elena's side when she wakes up in however many years it takes, and he's going to do everything he can to make sure he still believes he's worthy of her. He will hit a lot of bumps in the road coming up in the next few episodes, and will have to make some drastic decisions. Don't forget, when we started this season, he was lying desiccated in a coffin next to hers," she wrote.

Meanwhile, Plec previously said that Dobrev's return may take place during the show's final season.

As such, as long as "The Vampire Diaries" is airing on The CW, it's highly likely that Dobrev will not yet reprise her role as Elena.

While speaking with TV Line last month, Plec said that Dobrev will also be featured on the show if ever something huge or catastrophic takes place.

The exec added that she is now more focused on providing good storylines for the two male characters on the show - Damon and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley).

"I basically committed to Ian and Paul that when they're ready to be done, I'll be done. They could be ready very soon, or they could really want to stick it out Right now, that's up to them. I'm with them as long as I feel like I can keep telling stories for them," she said.

Plec added that there's one more story regarding Elena that hasn't been told. So this is what her storyline could be in the finale.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
