If latest reports are any indication, Apple is likely to call its upcoming 4-inch smartphone "iPhone SE" instead of the previously rumored iPhone 5se. If the reports come true, it will be the first time that the Cupertino tech titan will be launching an iPhone without a number, freeing the device of a yearly update cycle.

The new iPhone will be an upgraded version of the iPhone 5s launched by the company in 2013, 9to5 Mac reported. Considering the current trend in the smartphone market, which is dominated by devices sporting large screens, it would be prudent for Apple to name its new upgraded 4-inch smartphone simply "iPhone SE."

According to sources, dropping the number "5" from the iPhone's name will also help the company to avoid any potential confusion among the consumers, who are now familiar with the iPhone 6 and expecting Apple to launch its next-gen phone, iPhone 7, in September.

In terms of specs and features, the iPhone SE will have a similar appearance as the iPhone 5s, but will come with somewhat curved edges around its sides. The new device will pack an A9 processor that will aid faster performance, and an M9 chip for fitness tracking. In addition, the iPhone SE will also incorporate the always-on "Hey Siri" support; possess the ability to take Live Photos; and sport an upgraded 8-megapixel primary rear camera.

It is also expected that the upcoming 4-inch iPhone will incorporate an NFC chip for Apple Pay, aside from the company's most recent Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, as well as cellular hardware. According to sources, the device will be available in two variants, 16GB and 64GB capacities, and offer an additional Rose Gold color option, which is present in the iPhone 6s series. Rumors also suggest that since the iPhone SE will be replacing the iPhone 5s, it will carry a similar price tag, another report said.

Apple has announced it will be hosting a launch event on March 15 and if the company sticks its schedule, fans may expect to avail the new iPhone SE as early as March 18. It is expected that the Cupertino tech titan will also launch a new 9.7-inch iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil support.

Meanwhile, reliable tipster @OnLeaks has leaked the design schematics of the iPhone SE on Twitter. According to the leak, Apple is testing two different prototypes for the new 4-inch iPhone. Aside from continuing with the existing design of the iPhone 5s, Apple is also expected to introduce a few changes to bring the design of the new iPhone on parity with the current iPhone 6s.
