"Doctor Strange" is easily one of the most anticipated film of 2016. Starring acclaimed actor Benedict Cumberbatch at the title role, the film is set to introduce another side to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Created by artist and character conceptualist Steve Ditko, "Doctor Strange" was first published in 1964 and tells the story of a surgeon named Stephen Vincent Strange, a character who would later become the Sorcerer Supreme. To get there, he was mentored by the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Doctor Strange is known as the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.
In his origin story, "Doctor Strange" was depicted as an egotistical brilliant surgeon who had a career-ending car accident that took away his ability to perform surgery. On his quest to repair his hands, he encounters the Ancient One. The Ancient One is a title, someone who seeks to use magic for peaceful and beneficial purposes.
To prepare the audience on the mysticism and dimensions that will be introduced, Marvel had been planting glimpses of the what is to come in "Agent Carter" with the with the mention of "Dark Dimension" through the "Zero Matter" and in "Ant-Man" where Scot Lang was taken to the quantum realm when he went sub-atomic. The television side of the MCU is also set to take a full plunge in the realm full of magical abilities when "Iron Fist" premieres.
Given the premise, the film will reportedly adapt mind-bending visuals which may include intense images and fair amount of violence but the film is guaranteed to be PG-13, CinemaBlend reported. "Guardians of the Galaxy" cinematographer Ben Davis will oversee the visuals for the film.
As for baddies, "Doctor Strange" has Mads Mikkelsen who will play the role of "a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect" believing that the Ancient One is out to protect her own base, ScreenRant reported. Rob Keyes thinks that the character will likely be Kaecilius, a servant of "Doctor Strange's" archnemesis, Baron Mordo (Chitiwel Ejiofor).
Much like Marvel's formula for finding a director to helm its film properties, the studio tapped "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Sinister" filmmaker Scott Derrickson for "Doctor Strange" with "Prometheus" screenwriter John Spaihts and his friend Christopher Robert Cargill.
"Doctor Strange" opens on Nov. 4. To know more about the comic book history of "Doctor Strange," watch the video below:
