"The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley is rumored to have no other choice but to leave the hit The CW series at the end of season 8.

By then, there are some speculations that the show will already be cancelled because Wesley's co-star Ian Somerhalder already confirmed that he will be exiting at the end of the upcoming season.

While speaking with E! News last month, executive producer Julie Plec said that the fate of "The Vampire Diaries" does not solely depend on her, but on Wesley and Somerhalder as well.

"I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied in to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean it in a really good way. As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won't walk away from telling the story," she said.

Meanwhile, since Somerhalder already confirmed his departure on the show a few weeks ago, it seems that "The Vampire Diaries" will have to also end after season 8.

At that time, the actor said, "We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice."

Immediately after, the actor retracted his statement and clarified that the series may not end after season 8, but he will definitely leave the show by then.

"Hey, all, so... Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe - my last year - be as great as possible. Somehow in my infinite wisdom and end-of-season foggy brain, I managed to make it sound like the show was coming to an end. Cut-to the press running stories that the show would be done after season 8. Thing is, people who actually make that decision (The CW and WB) haven't made it yet! So let's take things one step at a time: Season 7 wrap, vacation, lots of sleep, let the writers get started on season 8, and then we'll all see where we go from here. Until then, much love," he tweeted.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
