Nexus 7 (2016) release date set for May 18; Android N introduces security measures to prevent future Stagefright

Google Nexus 2016 release is reportedly not happening anytime soon as Google will opt for a launch later this year.

Google's I/O Developers' Conference is happening next week and there is no teaser yet floating around hinting what the company will present in the said event. However, reports claimed that the company will focus on other aspects of the business like self-driving cars and Android VR.

Rumors pointed that Google will most likely announce the next generation of Google Nexus 2016 in the fall this year similar to what it did in the past years.

According to The Inquirer, below are the stars of this year's event:

Android N - Android N is the next generation of the company's operating system. It will pack new software features that will improve the performance of the OS. It is reported that the OS will pack Android Pay that is working in more countries for wireless payments.

Android VR - Due to the rise of virtual reality devices this year, it is not surprising that Google will follow suit with the trend and will present a new Android VR device. Google has already entered the VR game with the cheap and cheerful cardboard headset. However, the firm is reportedly gearing up to go head-to-head against Samsung with the launch of a mid-range Android-powered VR headset.

Self-Driving Cars - Google announced that it is looking for people to test its self-driving cars. It is probably time for the vehicles to take center stage in the event.

Project Tango - Lastly, one of the main products to be introduced in the event is Project Tango. Google's Project Tango augmented reality smartphone tech has finally found a partner in Lenovo, which plans to launch a handset capable of 3D mapping later this year. The firm might take the opportunity to show off the device during I/O, or Google might even showcase its own Project Tango hardware.

Meanwhile, Google Nexus 2016 features include a 5.1-inch or 7-inch screen display. Under the hood, the device will be powered by Snapdragon 820 SoC and NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor paired with 4GB of RAM, and Android N operating system.

Google Nexus 2016 could be the first Nexus smartphone to pack a 2TB external storage via microSD slot, which is missing from the previous Nexus smartphones. The smartphone may also pack a 12MP back camera and 5MP front-facing camera. All of these hardware specs are supported by 3,000mAh battery.
