"Captain America: Civil War" currently holds an impressive 90 percent approval rating, while "Dawn of Justice" received mostly negative reviews from review aggregator sites.

It is safe to say how the movie industry has been saturated with comic book adaptations over the past few years. It seems like there is a new Marvel or DC features every six months, and fortunately for comic book followers, the end of the adaptation trend is still in the far off future.

Just recently, Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War" made its highly anticipated debut. The premiere comes a few months following the release of DC's contender - "Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice." With both features released for public consumption, it is now easier to measure both movies against each other.

So how does "Captain America: Civil War" compare to "Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice"?

Storyline and Tone

It is safe to say that "Civil War" and "Dawn of Justice" have similar plots. In fact, the DC and Marvel feature both opened their films with their specific heroes rallying against terrorists in an African country. In both movies, an internal conflict between the band of superheroes have led them to take sides and inflict pain on each other.

According to Fandom, despite their similar stories, the execution and tone is where the two movies differ, as DC comics style "Dawn of Justice" had a gritty and grim tone, while "Civil War" remained loyal to the light and humorous tone Avengers fans have come to know and love.

Commercial Success

"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" premiered almost two months before "Captain America: Civil War." Since its premiere, the movie has earned a whopping $800 million worldwide, and according to Box Office Mojo, it is the highest grossing movie in March.

"Captain America: Civil War," on the other hand, is still currently showing in theatres nationwide. As of this weekend, the movie has earned more than $700 million.

Critical Reviews

"Dawn of Justice" received mostly negative reviews from review aggregator site since its premiere. Currently, it holds a disappointing 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 44/100 on Metacritic. Critics explained that the movie seemed to not understand what the iconic superheroes, Superman and Batman, are all about.

Inversely, "Captain America: Civil War" currently holds an impressive 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 75 out of 100 on Metacritic. Unlike "Dawn of Justice," the movie is praised for being self-aware. While it may have not revolutionized the genre, it remains loyal to what fans have grown to love about the franchise.
