New Samsung S7 Worldwide Unveiling

Samsung recently revealed a mind-blowing video showing Samsung Display with rollable OLED, which is a prototype of their rumored flexible and foldable smartphones and tablets version. This is an evolution of the edge design and curved display of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6.

Speculations reveal that a Galaxy X flagship smartphone with a flexible display, will be joining the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines next year. Samsung recently showed off the Samsung Display's OLED technology at the SID 2016 event in San Francisco.

The phone when opened out, has a rollable screen that measures 5.7-inch diagonally with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. When rolled up, the panels are contained in a metal cylinder or a tube with a radius of 10mm, BGR reported.

The video reveals that the rumored technology from Samsung is indeed here and has already been there all the time. It is possible for Samsung to roll the screen because the panel's thickness is merely 0.3 mm and it just weighs 5g. But the screen used in the demo doesn't have a touch layer yet.

Apparently, once the touch layer is added, the thickness will be increased and its flexibility will be affected. Slash Gear also noted that a battery would be needed for the commercial device because the one on the demo was externally powered.

A protective layer on the OLED screen might also be necessary to avoid it from getting damaged easily. The website also added that it isn't clear if how many roll-ups and unrollings can the screen handle before it could break or crack.

This new technology may bring a totally new form to smartphones and phablets creating compact devices that can easily fit in a user's pocket. Reports even reveal that apart from being rolled, the Samsung foldable smartphone can also be folded in half like a wallet, but this feature wasn't announced by the company yet.

Apart from the rollable OLED screen, Samsung also showcased a 5.7-inch flexible screen phone which is more curvaceous than the Galaxy S7 edge featuring 2560 x 1440 resolution and 420 nits of brightness. It also has a thickness of 0.3 mm and a pixel density of 551 ppi.

Reports believe that a rollable phone named Samsung Galaxy X will soon be released on 2017, joining its flagship Android smartphones.
