Apple is planning to make an all glass iPhone 8 for next year with the possibility of an OLED display but drop tests have shown that it could be a bad decision.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is known for trying to come up with the latest gimmick in smartphones and tablets. An all glass iPhone 8 is not far from possible especially now that a chassis maker for Apple confirmed that the company is making glass casings for their next device.

There are already a lot of metal, aluminum and plastic builds for smartphones today. Using a different kind of material for the casing and chassis of the phone could prove to be an attractive factor for consumers.

However, the all glass iPhone 8 might be a bad idea considering that people tend to drop their smartphones more often than not. PhoneBuff from YouTube conducted a drop test between the aluminum iPhone 6s and the glass Galaxy S7 with the latter suffering more cracks and fractures, Cult of Mac has learned.

The same fate could fall on the next iPhone from Apple if they decide to go with a glass chassis. Even with an external phone case, the fragility of the glass can prove to be a problem.

Catcher Technology CEO Allen Horng told shareholders that Apple will be making an all glass iPhone 8 for 2017, Forbes reported. He also said that the technology needed for manufacturing the glass chassis is expensive and highly advanced compared to other methods.

The expensive manufacturing method could also lead to a much higher price tag for the phone next year. In addition, there are also speculations that it will be using OLED displays instead of their traditional IPS LCD.

Samsung and Apple has recently closed a deal wherein the former will provide the latter with OLED displays for 2017. Of course, this would automatically translate to the new phones having the improved screens.

Apple could be making an all glass iPhone 8 with an OLED display for next year. The drop tests conducted could show the fate of the glass chassis if not made strong enough.
