Sony is expected to finally unveil the PlayStation NEO 4K at the E3 2016 event but there are reports claiming that the new upgraded PS4 console exists because the PlayStation VR is "awful."
Since the PlayStation NEO 4K would have more processing power compared to the original PlayStation 4, it would make sense that the PS VR will run better on the new console. Virtual reality headsets need more power in order to run smoothly in terms of frame rates as a lower number of frames per second could lead to a nauseating experience for the user.
In fact, the Oculus Rift VR headset and the HTC Vive both need powerful gaming rigs to run. The recommended card was at least a GTX 980 but the new GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 from NVIDIA has been proven to be more powerful.
Consoles are not upgradable in a sense that users can just change parts. Owners would need to wait for several years before they can get a more powerful console for another whole price tag to be paid.
Sony's new PlayStation NEO 4K could have been made because of the "crazy requirements" the PlayStation VR has, TCC has learned. The statement comes from an anonymous Chief Technical Officer from an unnamed company in the gaming industry.
There are also reports of an external box that Sony will be bundling with the PS VR. It could be a supplemental computing device just like what the Nintendo NX could use when it launches.
Just Add Water CEO Steward Gilray debunked the earlier statement that spread the rumors of the PlayStation NEO 4K's existence for the PlayStation VR, WCCFTech reported. He said that the new console does run the headset better but the experience between the two is "largely the same."
With the VR industry set to take off this year, the consoles and gaming rigs required to run them need to be ready. There are even reports of Microsoft planning to launch an Xbox Scorpio that will be more powerful than the PS 4.5.
Sony is expected to reveal the PlayStation NEO 4K at the upcoming E3 2016 event in June. The company could clarify whether it would even support the PlayStation VR headset which used the original PlayStation 4 during its demonstrations.
