Lotte Verbeek, Sam Heughan, Graham McTavish, Caitriona Balfe, Ronald D. Moore, Gary Lewis, and Tobias Menzies attend the 'Outlander' mid-season New York premiere at Ziegfeld Theater on April 1, 2015.

It was on June 2, 2013 when Tobias Menzies last appeared in "Game of Thrones" as Edmure Tully. Recently, in Season 6 episode 6 titled "Blood of My Blood," fans were surprised by the return of the character to the HBO hit series.

In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyMenzies explained that it is possible that Edmure has not been in a prison for as long as two and a half years. He said it is not clear how much time has elapsed but it is likely to be only about a year.

Menzies said he also was surprised to hear from the producers of "Game of Thrones" after a couple of seasons. He said he was not sure if the producers knew themselves that Edmure would return someday but they kind of found their way and chose what parts of George R.R. Martin's book they are doing.

For Menzies, his return to the HBO series was a very nice surprise as he did not really have a huge expectation that he would come back. Before they filmed "Blood of My Blood," the producers got in contact a little bit to check his availability and see if they could fit him in, he said.

According to Menzies, it was a question of fitting in amongst his other commitments. Aside from "Game of Thrones," the actor also stars in "The Night Manager" as Geoffrey Dromgoole and in "Outlander" as Jack Randall/Frank Randall.

On the other hand, the actor said he is a big fan of "Game of Thrones" so he was keen to make it work if he could. In "Blood of My Blood," his character did not have any dialogue but it was revealed that he is still there and the Freys still have him.

Edmure's return as featured in "Blood of My Blood" was filmed in autumn in 2015 while Menzies was away from "Outlander" for a few months, the actor revealed. At the time, he was in Prague busy shooting a film.

On the big screen, Menzies is set to star in Anna Foerster's action horror film "Underworld: Blood Wars." His main co-stars are Charles Dance and Kate Beckinsale, who recently made an appearance at Oxford University's Union, Daily Mail reported.
