Remember saying "I wish I could be in his shoes" when Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon on July 21, 1969?
Well, you could soon be in Neil Armstrong's shoes -virtually -- when he takes that historic first step thanks to a virtual reality project that could soon go mainstream.
Immersive VR Education, a startup based in Ireland, is developing "The Apollo 11 Experience," a virtual reality documentary that will take the user to the Moon using archive footage and audio from NASA. A prototype demo is available for Facebook's Oculus Rift VR headset, according to The Guardian.
The company said it created an inspirational journey it hopes will engage students and give them a better understanding of what took place way back in 1969. The Apollo 11 Experience is the newest example of VR being used outside the gaming community.
"We don't just want kids to read about history, we want them to experience history as a living entity that they can relate to," said the company's Kickstarter pitch.
If its crowdfunding campaign succeeds, the company will expand the prototype into a full app that has more detailed scenery, animated avatars and interactive features. There will also be interviews with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first two men on the Moon.
Players will be able to carry out the same experiments as Armstrong and Aldrin explore the lunar surface.
But to get the project done, Immersive VR Education has begun crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise the needed funds. The app is set for release in July.
