High School Musical is a 2006 American teen/romantic comedy musical television film and the first installment in the High School Musical trilogy.

With "High School Musical 4" getting green lit by Disney, fans are now scrambling for answers whether the original cast members will reprise their roles, particularly estranged couple Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron.

At the center of controversy is Efron, who played basketball team captain Troy Bolton. In the "High School Musical" reunion special early this year, he was the only main cast member absent. It was revealed that Efron's busy schedule kept him from joining the rest of the East High squad, and his absence gave Hudgens a sigh of relief as it was rumored that she would not join the reunion if Efron attended.

In an interview with Elle, Efron revealed that he was not a fan of his own work. Although he didn't mention any specific titles, many presume his statement refers to "High School Musical."

Whatever friction Efron and Hudgens may have had after their break up in 2010, fans are hoping they would patch things up in time for the production of "High School Musical 4," and indeed so, it seems that prayers have been answered.

Efron posted a throwback photo on Instagram showing him together with Ashley Tisdale, Hudgens and Corbin Bleau. Fans saw this as a sign that he is willing to reunite with his "High School Musical" co-stars, including his former love.

A few days after Efron's post went online, Hudgens took to Twitter to post a cropped photo of two people kissing. Many people believe that the couple in the picture is Efron and Hudgens back when they were still together. Hudgens' followers believe this to be an indication that she is warming up to her ex-boyfriend.

Hudgens expressed her support for Disney's plan to bring back the wildly popular "High School Musical" franchise.

"I love musicals. Being able to do musicals is such a dream of mine and the fact that they're keeping it alive and bringing it to a new generation is really wonderful," Hudgens told ET. She also shared that she still relives the experience by singing some of the popular tunes from the movie such as "Breaking Free" and "We're All In This Together."

"High School Musical 4" is said to focus on the story of the new generation of East High Wildcats, but the original cast members are expected to make an appearance. Some of them will even play mentors to the younger Wildcats.
