‘Warcraft’ Could Topple ‘Zootopia’ as Top-Grossing Foreign Movie in 2016 with over $200M Box Office in 12 Weeks

"Warcraft" movie will be shown ahead in China on June 8, two days prior to the U.S. premiere.

First, this epic movie threatened to break the 1st day box-office record of ‘Furious 7’ in China with a $46 million receipt. In less than two weeks, "Warcraft" has high chances of breaching another box-office receipt records in the Asian giant.

At risk of losing its crown as the top-grossing imported movie of 2016 in China is “Zootopia” after Legendary Pictures’ video game-inspired film grossed more than $200 million in 12 days of exhibition. It is just $28.63 million away from “Zootopia’s’ record of $235.4 million, reported LA Times.

Since its June 8 release, “Warcraft” has taken in $206.77 million to date, almost four times the $48.7 million first week box-office receipts. Globally, the movie has earned, so far, $377 million, which means Chinese movie fans accounted for 55 percent of the film’s earnings.

In second place is Pixar’s “Finding Dory” with $18.2 million box-office in three days, followed by “X-Men Apocalypse,” with $15.7 million. The fourth and fifth placers are “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” $58.7 million, and “Warrior vs. Dragon,” $1.5 million.

However, in the U.S., “Warcraft” suffered a 73 percent drop in box-office receipts on its second weekend, according to Forbes. Although it earned only $37 million in North America, with China’s box-office, Russia’s $21.9 million and IMAX’s $44 million, the film is still the biggest video game movie ever made. But its U.S. gross pales in comparison to “Tomb Raider’s” $131 million and “Prince of Persia’s” $336 million.
