Before starring in "The Legend of Tarzan" with Margot Robbie, Alexander Skarsgard starred in "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" and "Kill Your Darlings." While promoting "The Legend of Tarzan" on "Conan," which aired on June 29, Wednesday, he explained why he was in full drag for "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" premiere in August 2015.
Skarsgard told Conan O'Brien that the first assistant director of "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" named Cousin Wonderlette is a legendary drag queen in San Francisco. She hosted the premiere with all her drag queen friends.
"There was just something about the excitement about getting ready for the premiere as I was sitting there with my gray suit," Skarsgard recalled. "They were talking about their wigs and their dresses and everything and I felt left out, so I asked Cousin, 'Can I play? Can I be a part of this?'"
Wonderlette allowed Skarsgard to be part of the excitement and asked him who he wanted to be. The latter chose to be in full drag channeling the late Farrah Fawcett, who was known for the films "The Burning Bed," "Saturn 3," "The Cannonball Run" and "Logan's Run," among others.
In "Kill Your Darlings," Skarsgard played a transvestite. On the small screen, he was known for playing the pansexual vampire named Eric Northman in "True Blood" from 2008 to 2014.
While Skarsgard's interview on "Conan" was airing on TBS, he was spotted making his way through John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. He paired his casual outfit with Tod's shoes, Just Jared Jr. reported.
In another interview with Pride Source, Skarsgard was asked to describe the feeling of putting on women's clothing. The actor said he loved it and it was "so much fun."
For Skarsgard, portraying a pansexual vampire on "True Blood" was just liberating and one of the "most profound experiences ever." The actor added that it never felt gratuitous even though there was much nudity on the show.
Directed by David Yates, "The Legend of Tarzan" hit theaters on July 1, Friday. With Skarsgard as Tarzan and Robbie as Jane, the action adventure film also stars Rory R. Saper, Christian Stevens, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Sidney Ralitsoele, Osy Ikhile, Mens-Sana Tamakloe, Antony Acheampong, Edward Apeagyei, Ashley Byam, Casper Crump, Adam Ganne and Aleksandar Mikic, among others.
