"Game of Thrones" Yara Greyjoy actress Gemma Whelan would love to have her character and that of Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen getting into the Seven Kingdoms holding hands in season 7. Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Greyjoy's brother Theon (Alfie Allen) should be there as well.
Whelan had her character revealing her interest in women but her bond with Targaryen was spontaneous. The drama ended season 6 this year leaving a lot of stuff for its followers to process for a long time - from the badass Lady Mormont of Bear Island, to Tormund Giantsbane's eyes for Brienne of Tarth. Then there was that recent armada sailing towards Westeros with Targaryen, the Greyjoys and Lannister onboard. Unknown to viewers, Targaryen's flirtations with the female Greyjoy were not in the script but both the actresses who play the characters are enjoying it.
The Targaryen-Greyjoy meeting in season 6 was never expected to create a potential romance between the characters. Whelan did not expect to be surrounded by dragons in the recent season and even admitted she did not know what "shipping" means.
"It's been all over my Twitter - 'I ship these two' - and I've been asked about it at conventions too - 'Who would you ship?' - and I have no idea what they mean," Whelan told Digital Spy. "But if it's a positive thing then yeah, sure, let's ship!"
"Emilia and I both enjoy the idea of continuing their relationship in Season 7," Whelan likewise told Vulture. Flirtation was not spelled out in the script. "It just turned out that Emilia [Clarke] and I had some chemistry going on!"
Whelan suspected the script may have intended it but did not need any writing down. The actress saw the match of two characters, and they got the idea to act it out.
Both Targaryen and Greyjoy stand for something appealing, though not necessarily sexual. They are being attracted to power and want to have it. They see that they can do together.
The Targaryen-Greyjoy relationship could come into fruition in season 7 and both Clarke and Whelan get along well on the set. They like and reflect each other so whether their relationship go beyond friendship or not would be irrelevant. Whatever happens to their characters would be up to the show writers.
"Game of Thrones" season 7 is up for next year and is reportedly premiering later than in previous years. Followers still have to wait to see what fate awaits the Targaryen-Greyjoy relationship.
