The Google Maps app is seen on an Apple iPhone 4S on December 13, 2012 in Fairfax, California.

Google will reportedly roll out a new feature for their Google Maps app that will allow users to use it only when there is an available Wi-Fi connection instead of mobile data.

Even with the fast mobile data plans available, most of them still have data caps and they can eat the battery like there is no tomorrow. In addition, the GPS and data combination could also lead to Google Maps app draining the battery juice faster than ever.

Users who have been receiving the new Google Maps update reported that a new "Wi-Fi only" option can be found in the app's Settings menu, ZDNet has learned. However, there could still be a small amount of data that will be used although it will not be as huge as what the previous versions consumed on average.

The new option will reportedly replace the "Offline Areas" option which have proved to be useful for those who are planning trips without the need to use any sort of data or Wi-Fi connection. Some users think that the removal of the feature could be detrimental to the app's popularity with the public considering that not everyone has stable Wi-Fi and data connections.

Google has not announced the update yet and the new reported features of Google Maps, TechCrunch reported. However, the fact that some people have already found the new features on their Google Maps app from the Google Play Store could prove that the search engine giant is indeed up to something.

The offline areas option has allowed users to download a specific area or location to their smartphones for offline use. To save space, the feature deletes the downloaded maps if they are not updated within a month.

Drivers and commuters often use Google Maps as their navigation tool especially if they are in an unfamiliar territory. The GPS and data combination is already powerful and the new Wi-Fi only option would help users save on their data caps.

Google Maps can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store. The official update can be expected in the following weeks.
