The heir-apparent to the throne of "Descendants of the Sun" is still a toss-off among three Hallyus – “W,” “Doctors” and “Uncontrollably Fond.”
In the meantime that South Korean viewers are choosing among the three dramas which have yet to reach the 30 percent viewers rating enjoyed by the popular 16-episode blockbuster KBS 2TV series, the producers of “Descendants of the Sun” are preparing for the release of the director's cut DVD.
AllKpop reported that the cast, director and writers of the drama gathered to record a special commentary for the soon-to-be-released DVD on Aug. 2, six months since they have been together. Besides the four leading actors of the series, Song Joong-ki, Song Hye Kyo, Kim Ji Won and Jin Goo, director Lee Eung Bok and writers Kim Eun Sook and Kim Won Suk also gave their commentaries.
Aside from the commentaries of the seven key “Descendants of the Sun” performers and executives, the director’s cut DVD would also feature unreleased footage and additional scenes.
Meanwhile, Movienewsguide reported that one week after the Hallyu premiered on Philippine TV, the series got a 22 percent rating on AGB Nielsen as of July 25. It beat the competition on rival station ABS-CBN. Broadcast giant GMA bought the rights to air “Descendants of the Sun” in the Philippines where many young people are KPop fans.
Besides having Pilipino lines, since the Philippine version is one of the 32 international adaptations of the TV series, the characters have been given English first names. Captain Yoo Shi Jin became Lucas Yoo, surgeon Dr. Kang became Maxine Kang, Seo Dae Young became Diego Seo and Yoon Myeong Joo became Moira Yoon.
