Intel is now issuing a full recall of their Basis Peak fitness watches because the device can burn the person wearing it due to an overheating issue.
Customers who bought the Basis Peak fitness watch can return it to the nearest authorized store for a refund which includes the shipping costs and sales tax along with the unit price. These watches were sold and shipped between November 2014 and June 2016 but Intel just discovered the overheating problem just now.
Intel Senior VP Josh Walden said that the Basis Peak fitness watches can overheat and burn the user's skin with the extreme heat. Those who are just using it fine are still urged to return the watch and to get a refund instead.
Full refunds have already been given to those who reported the Basis Peak watch overheating problems in June but Intel is now admitting that a fix cannot be found, PC World has learned. The problem lies in the active LED on the rear end of the Basis Peak fitness watch that is used to monitor the heart rate of the user.
If the watch overheats, the LED can cause the burns and blisters for the users. Intel said that there were only 0.2 percent of the watch owners who reported the injuries but they are now issuing a full recall since there is no permanent fix for the problem in sight.
One Basis Science spokesman said that Intel is not planning for a replacement product soon for the defective Peak fitness watches, the Wall Street Journal reported. They also could not an estimate on how many Basis Peak fitness watches were sold between 2014 and 2016.
Most fitness trackers today are still not as accurate with their heart monitors compared to the medical-grade trackers. They offer a quick estimate to their heart rates and calories burned as the high-end trackers are usually used in hospitals because of their accuracy and large size.
Intel's recall on the Basis Peak fitness watch means that they will no longer have a fitness tracker product on the market. Basis could still be developing a new product but there are no updates yet regarding on that matter from the company.
