'Suicide Squad' star Jai Courtney has confirmed he does not see any sequel in the pipeline for the "Terminator" franchise. The latter was promising following "Terminator Genisys" which was directed by Alan Taylor.
Film distributor Paramount Pictures had many plans for the sci-fi series. Arnold Schwarzenegger returned, there was a great script and one of the most sought-after actresses Emilia Clarke was recruited by the studio.
However, many happened after that, some of which were unfavorable. "Terminator Genisys" earned $440.6 million only including that from China's movie market. Despite being among the huge summer movies in 2015, it only made $89.7 million domestically and $27 million during its opening.
It was not a good box office earning for a franchise that has its original star reprising his role as the killing machine for the first time in 12 years. Paramount then delayed the sequels of the series while Clarke did not expect to reprise her role as Sarah Connor anytime soon though Schwarzenegger remained optimistic
"With 'Terminator,' who knows, it's probably time to leave it where it is," Jai Courtney who played Kyle Reese in "Terminator Genisys" told Business Insider. "But if they can get back in there and dig around and decide there is another film to make, I'll take the call."
Though "Terminator" is too huge to be dormant, it may take some time before fans forget the flop of Taylor's film. As for the franchise' fans, there is still a hope for a comeback. Director James Cameron, the franchise creator will get its rights back in 2019.
With the low reception of "Genisys," pulling out a sequel could be challenging for Paramount. The studio instead focuses on the upcoming "Baywatch" movie set to release in May 2017, SlashFilm reported. It stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron while Seth Gordon directs.
Meanwhile, Courtney also played the son of John McClane (Bruce Willis) in the 2013 "A Good Day to Die Hard" who likewise had a weak box office performance. Hence, the actor is not new to franchise relaunches that did not live up to expectations.
The Australian actor stars in the upcoming project of David Ayer, "Suicide Squad." It is set to be in theaters on Aug. 5.
