The 87th annual Oscars Awards host Neil Patrick Harris was seen earlier on Feb. 22, Sunday, at the red carpet rocking a grey tuxedo and a bowtie as he posed for the cameras. In a photo posted by the Hollywood Reporter, the host and actor graced the red carpet for the 2015 event of the year held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
What was more of a buzz, however, is his opening number, which was a song about the nominees. The star is best known for his work for the long-running series "How I Met Your Mother" and this year's hit flick "Gone Girl."
According to The Verge, Harris' musical number started with a joke saying, "Tonight we honor the best and whitest—I mean brightest." This caused the crowd to erupt with laughter.
He mocked the lack of racial diversity of this year's Oscars as most of the nominees are, indeed, White people. The host echoed sentiments of the Twitterverse when the nominees were announced on January 2015 and the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite began trending then.
The musical number showed the history of cinema as he talked about the importance of moving pictures and the nominated films while backup dancers wore costumes to represent the biggest flicks this year. A gigantic rear projector also showed the classic films that Hollywood started with while Harris incorporated humor to make the production all the more extravagant.
Also in the production number is Anna Kendrick, who channeled the movie "Into The Woods" as she wore her costume for Cinderella, which she also starred in. Moments before Kendrick and Harris are to finish their number, Jack Black interrupts the number from the audience and sings his own lines but was cut off by Harris before he could finish his stunt.
