Freeform's "Shadowhunters" series suffered a creative shakeup, shortly when showrunner Ed Decter exited the show after it was renewed for a second season in March. However, sources confirmed that the network has tapped several candidates for the position.
Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, showrunners of the 2011 hit series "Smallville," have been announced as the new executive producers and showrunners of "Shadowhunters." They are taking the reins following Decter's exit. He was responsible for developing the television adaptation of the "Mortal Instruments" book series. Deadline also reported that Matt Hastings is on board as executive producer and series director.
Decter's exit from "Shadowhunters" was rather unexpected, as he actively spoke about his plans for Season 2 prior to the announcement. However, production for Season 2 will continue as scheduled.
Despite a rather shaky start, "Shadowhunters" proved to be a successful show for Freeform, having claimed two recognitions at the recently-held Teen Choice Awards 2016.
In "Shadowhunters" Season 2, Jace's journey will take a very dark turn. Decter stated that the show's writers will continue to remain faithful to the books, so fans of Cassandra Clare's novels already have an idea of the dark path Jace is about to take.
Actor Dominic Sherwood, who plays Jace, shared juicy details about "Shadowhunters" Season 2 in an interview with Glamoholic.
"So one, Jace gets worse before he gets better; two, there will be a lot of Clace and Malec; and three, we may be meeting the Seelie Queen," Sherwood disclosed.
Speaking of Malec, Camille will be back in Season 2. This time, however, she is not seen as a threat to Magnus and Alec's relationship, but instead will be a threat to Raphael and the rest of the vampire coven.
The other characters as well will go through major transformations in "Shadowhunters" Season 2, especially with respect to Jocelyn and Luke's relationship. Simon's girlfriend, Maureen, will also have a lot of character development, and as Sherwood mentioned, the Seelie Queen is definitely making her debut as the show starts building the other realms.
"Shadowhunters" Season 2 is expected to return to television in 2017.
