Marvel's "Runaways" has been chosen to pilot at the popular streaming service, Hulu. The story was launched in 2003, alongside other new titles from the comic book arm "Tsunami," which drew readers with fresh concepts and new takes on existing characters. Among the other titles were "Spider Man" villain Venom and the Inhumans.
Debuted in 2003, "Runaways" was created by Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona. Vaughan has penned DC and Vertigo's "Y: The Last Man" and the upcoming "Lost" of ABC. He will also co-create CBS' "Under the Dome" while Alphona will co-create Marvel's "Ms. Marvel" series with G. Willow Wilson.
Written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, creators of "Gossip Girls," "Runaways" tells the story of six teenagers who cannot stand each other, but should work together to fight against their enemies - their own parents. Learning about how evil their parents are, the kids are worried about their own evil destinies.
Schwartz, a long fan of the story is excited to bring to life the characters created by Vaughan and Alphona. Both he and Savage are ready to work for Hulu and Marvel.
Schwartz and Savage will serve as showrunners of "Runaways." They executive produce the project, together with Jeph Loeb ("Jessica Jones"), Jim Chory ("Daredevil") and Lis Rowinski ("Fake Empire"), Deadline reported.
With some stories of superpowers, millennial drama, a dinosaur and teenage angst, "Runaways" is about teenagers who ran away from home after learning their parents are clandestinely super villains. Schwartz and Savage have a spacious room to make it weird as the characters deal with their lives, according to Engadget.
The teens found their family secrets when they witnessed their parents as part of a group called the "Pride," who killed a young girl in a sacrificial ritual. They ran away from their homes and grouped together to discover more about their parents' origins and of their own inherited powers. One can control a time-traveling dinosaur, another can cast any spell on a magical staff, while another teen has alien powers. One teen is simply a genius while another is a vampire.
The teens were framed for the murder of the sacrificed girl and were forced to fight against their parents. They resided in an abandoned home they call the Hostel and prepared to clear their names.
