Bigbang TOP lands art curator position for Hong Kong auction, reveals passion for collecting art

Bigbang's TOP has been awarded a rookie prize at the Asia Star Awards during the 18th Busan International Film Festival on October 5, 2013 in Busan, South Korea.

Bigbang TOP has added a new achievement to his list of accomplishments. The Korean singer is set to reveal taste in art as Sotheby Hong Kong's curator for its upcoming auction.

Sotheby Hong Kong is slated to hold a contemporary art auction on Oct. 3 where organizers have taken advantage of the Bigbang singer's popularity to promote the art sale. The event has been named "#TTOP," following TOP's Instagram account name. Avid Bigbang fans have been looking forward to the said event, although critics have wondered whether the musician has the necessary knowledge to head the auction.

However, Bigbang TOP has revealed in an interview with South China Morning Post that his passion for collecting started at a very young age. The Korean singer shared that he was only four years old when he started collecting various items such as Lego figures and sneakers. Although after Bigbang's successful debut into the Korean music industry, his interests have widened to include designer furniture and art pieces.

The Bigbang band member even mentioned some of the famous artists and emerging talents in the Asian art industry that he favors. These artisans include Tomoo Gokita, He Xiangyu, Lee Ufan, Jina Park, Chung Sanghwa and more. Some of these artists' artwork, along with other North American and European pieces, will also be featured in the upcoming Sotheby Hong Kong art auction.

TOP also made mention of his love for artworks done by German artists such as Gerhard Richter. He also named U.S-based Italian artist Rudolf Stingel as one of his favorites. The Korean singer even shared that he has one of Stingel's art pieces as part of his personal art collection.

Meanwhile, the Korean boy band Bigbang has been identified as one of the top K-pop male groups for the past two decades. Bigbang landed at the first place of a survey conducted by Donga Ilbo, a Korean media outlet, in partnership with Idology and research firm M Brain, Soompi reported.

The said K-pop group has been chosen as the top male band by 44 percent of the survey's 2,000 respondents. Bigbang's hit track "Lies" also landed at the top spot of the best K-pop song from a male singing group, as indicated in the same report. Other male singing groups who made it to the top five list include H.O.T., G.O.D., TVXQ and Shinhwa.
