The pain and anguish of the Sherbourne couple depicted on the sets of 'The Light Between Oceans'

''The Light Between Oceans'' is a saga of love, pain and longing for lost family. Alicia Vikander has given another brilliant performance as Isabel Sherbourne and many critics feel that this film too might win her another academy award.

The movie opened in cinemas on Sep. 1, Thursday in Venice and Sep. 2, Friday in the United States. The promotion of the film was phenomenal and the producers' decision to open the movie in the Venice film festival seems to be apt. The fans in United Kingdom are waiting to see their beloved actors Michael Fassbender (as Tom Sherbourne) and Vikander again creating magic on screen. It will open in the U.K on Nov. 4, 2016. Many fans feel that the director Derek Cianfrance has created an epic movie which will be watched by the future generation too.

The storyline of the movie begins when Fassbender, a war-scarred veteran from World War I accepts the dull job of a lighthouse keeper in the coast of Western Australia at Janus Rock, a quiet serene place. He was looking for some solitude and peace in life after going through the trauma of bloodshed in the war. Shortly after taking up the job, he meets his future wife Vikander, and gets moved by her tale of losing her brothers to the war.

The romance continues in a subdued tone through letters and finally the lovelorn couple marries and Vikander moves to his isolated seaside cottage. The heart wrenching score by Alexandre Desplat helps the couple to find love after the scars of the war. The tale of love would have continued for a longer time if Vikander would not have suffered two miscarriages and the pain of giving birth to a stillborn.

Then one day God answered to their desperate prayers and sent a dinghy which carried a dead man and a crying baby. Fassbender buries the man and decides to contact the authorities to find the family members of the baby; however, Vikander stops him from doing so. She urges him to keep the baby and raise her as their own. The tale of the now happy family continues until the baby Lucy grows into a young woman and the couple accidentally finds the biological mother of Lucy.

According to The Hollywood reporter, the movie failed to create the emotions it promised to create. It was somewhere lost in the period melodrama and the scenes of creating the post-world war life in the modern times. The movie has collected $6 million USD in the opening weekend; however, the producers were expecting it be in the range of $8-9 million USD. The budget of the movie was $20 million.

According to Variety, the movie is underperforming. The magic of the real life couple Vikander and Fassbender could not pull much crowd to the cinemas in the opening weekend. Watch the official trailer of the movie here to decide for yourself.
