A.J. Styles will have his third chance to win the WWE World Championship at Backlash when he faces Dean Ambrose. According to the latest rumors, Styles may come out as the new WWE champion at Backlash and taste his first ever WWE gold.
The buildup of the feud between Ambrose and Styles for the title has been subpar with both stars targeting each other's private area. What is it with the WWE and balls? First, Big E. gets kayfabe injured on Raw and now this?
Nevertheless, many fans are eager to see if Ambrose can retain his title while some are expecting Styles to finally win the big one. It will be a tremendous accomplishment for The Phenomenal One, who just made his WWE debut in January.
Styles is arguably the best wrestler on the WWE roster at the moment and the top heel on SmackDown. On the other hand, Ambrose has grown stale as champion and he might need to improve his character just like what Stone Cold Steve Austin told him on his podcast.
According to FanSided, Styles winning the WWE title will make SmackDown more intriguing since Raw has already done it, twice. Finn Balor became the first ever WWE Universal Champion at SummerSlam and Kevin Owens followed it up with a huge win last week to become the new champ.
It is also mentioned that heel champions are better since the babyfaces are meant to chase the title against the bad guy. Ambrose was getting great reactions before winning the championship because fans want him to win the title.
The WWE seems to be planning a Styles title reign all along since Vince McMahon has been impressed by him. Also, it will set up another huge match against John Cena when he returns from his hiatus to film his TV show, per Sportskeeda.
Cena vs. Styles has been the feud of the year in the WWE and it will likely culminate with Cena winning his 16th world title to tie Ric Flair's record. It comes at the expense of Styles but it would be great storytelling since Cena has not been world champion for two years.
Nevertheless, these are just purely speculative at the moment as the WWE tends to frequently change their plans. Check out the video below for the confrontation between Styles and Ambrose in this week's episode of SmackDown Live.
